Art is happy to have put down roots in Minnesota — actually, to have put down roots anywhere. Art grew up in cities around the world, dragged along from base to base by his mother and father, a Senior Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. By the time he finished high school, Art had attended 14 different schools in Europe, Asia and across North America. He and his wife, Laurie, have two daughters and live in Apple Valley, Minn.

In his spare time, Art teaches traditional native crafts, does beadwork and makes traditional Cherokee double-wall baskets. He is also learning the Cherokee language in weekly online classes sponsored by his tribe.
